Veneto is the land of Prosecco. The Italian champagne (which we personally think is better than actual Champagne… did you see our Infographic?) is part of the culture of Veneto.

The region is the most productive wine area of Italy, and Prosecco is the super star of all Italian wines. The most popular and famous in the world, it’s able to achieve astonishing targets in exportation markets all over the planet.

Tenuta degli Ultimi is set in a beautiful piece of land nearby Treviso, where nature and human beings work side by side to produce a remarkable juice of grapes.

We met up with them to understand more about Prosecco and its importance. We discovered more about a company that is taking much care in the environment in and around their vineyards, as it does in business.

tenuta degli ultimi

Bellavita – What would you describe as your top product?

Tenuta degli Ultimi, Sebastiano Ricci – Our most important product is our Prosecco Superiore Biancariva. Its name comes from that of Bianca, a sweet and lovely girl who, a thousand years ago, used to serve in the castle that dominates our lands. Bianca was the victim of jealousy and injustice. She was sentenced to death in prison, in the castle’s highest tower. But her sweetness and gentleness gave her immortality, being passed down from generation to generation, surviving even after the tower was nothing but rubble. Biancariva strives to be exactly like Bianca: it wants to capture the soul of the territory from which it originates. Pure, authentic and strong but always gentle. Because when it is genuine, delicacy is stronger than any wall.

BV – The package is sometimes equally as important as the product. What choices did you make to showcase your flavours to the world?

Tenuta degli Ultimi, Sebastiano Ricci – Our packaging perfectly sums up the company’s philosophy. It is simple but personal, it gently catches the attention of those who know what they want. It is also environmentally friendly. It reduces waste and uses just natural colours, avoiding all techniques involving pollutants. It uses only recycled and recyclable materials. But it is also simple, because simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

BV – When was your company founded? How it is growing? Tell us your story!

Tenuta degli Ultimi, Sebastiano Ricci – Our story began long ago. I am the youngest of 11 sons. Following the untimely demise of our father, the inherited land was shared equally between all of us, but at that time I was still underage.  I received my part a year later when I was old enough, naming it ‘Tenuta degli ultimi’ – the estate of the last.

I took it as a sign from destiny. ‘Being the last’ may have actually shaped who I, and the company, became. As our name suggests, the last is rarely shaped, but is happy to be anchored to its timeless values, never ageing, despite the passage of time. The last one is always too small to do something but is still a child and never betrays his own vision. The last is not smart enough to understand the laws of the market, that’s why he only listens to those of the soil. The last still believes in fairy tales. The last is never in a rush and waits for nature to take its course. The last one is simple and knows only one way to do things: the right one.

BV – Many Italian manufacturers have to fight against those who improperly use the Italian brand abroad (the so-called ‘Italian Sounding’ issue).
How do you think we could solve this problem?

Tenuta degli Ultimi, Sebastiano Ricci – The ‘Italian sounding’ issue makes us understand that also the consumers need to be trained to distinguish authentic Italian products. The problem of Italian sounding should be a stimulus for us as Italians to regain our cultural roots and to rediscover what our common values are. We have to be able to create products with the real essence of Italy. Features that can not be copied but only admired: quality and passion.
